Survey of EPA facilities for solar thermal energy applications
A study was done to assess the feasibility of applying solar thermal energy systems to EPA facilities. A survey was conducted to determine those EPA facilities where solar energy could best be used. These systems were optimized for each specific application and the system/facility combinations were ranked on the basis of greatest cost effectiveness
Global constants in (2+1)--dimensional gravity
The extended conformal algebra (so)(2,3) of global, quantum, constants of
motion in 2+1 dimensional gravity with topology R x T^2 and negative
cosmological constant is reviewed. It is shown that the 10 global constants
form a complete set by expressing them in terms of two commuting spinors and
the Dirac gamma matrices. The spinor components are the globally constant
holonomy parameters, and their respective spinor norms are their quantum

Magnetization Relaxation via Quantum and Classical Vortex Motion in a Bose Glass Superconductor
I show that in Bose Glass superconductor with high and at low the
magnetization relaxation (S), dominated by quantum tunneling, is , which crosses over to the conventional classical rate at
higher and lower , with the crossover . I argue
that due to interactions between flux lines there exist three relaxation
regimes, depending on whether ,
corresponding to Strongly-pinned Bose Glass (SBG) with large , Mott
Insulator (MI) with vanishing S, and Weakly-pinned Bose Glass (WBG)
characterized by small . I discuss the effects of interactions on
and focus attention on the recent experiment which is consistently described by

Saddle-splay modulus of a particle-laden fluid interface
The scaled-particle theory equation of state for the two-dimensional
hard-disk fluid on a curved surface is proposed and used to determine the
saddle-splay modulus of a particle-laden fluid interface. The resulting
contribution to saddle-splay modulus, which is caused by thermal motion of the
adsorbed particles, is comparable in magnitude with the saddle-splay modulus of

Food Industry Mergers and Acquisitions Lead to Higher Labor Productivity
Processing plants in eight major food industries were highly productive before being acquired and they significantly improved their labor productivity afterward, Economic Research Service and U.S. Census Bureau researchers found in their analysis of Census data. The plant-level data on production inputs and costs provided a detailed picture of food-production facilities involved in mergers and acquisitions. The industries are meatpacking, meat processing, poultry slaughtering and processing, cheese making, fluid milk processing, flour milling, feed processing, and oilseed crushing. The analysis suggests that mergers and acquisitions contributed to the general improvement in labor productivity, echoing an earlier ERS study. Structural Change in the Meat, Poultry, Dairy and Grain Processing Industries
Consolidation and structural changes in the food industry have had profound impacts on firms, employees, and communities in many parts of the United States. Over 1972-92, eight important food industries underwent a structural transformation in which the number of plants declined by about one-third and the number of employees needed to staff the remaining plants dropped by more than 100,000 (20 percent). The number of plants in one other industry also dropped, but that industry added jobs. Economists generally attribute structural changes such as these to rising or falling demand and shifts in technology. This report examines consolidation and structural change in meatpacking, meat processing, poultry slaughter and processing, cheese products, fluid milk, flour milling, corn milling, feed, and soybean processing. Plant size and output per employee rose sharply in all industries, and even industries with rapidly growing demand—such as soybean processing and poultry slaughter/processing—used fewer plants. Effect of Food Industry Mergers and Acquisitions on Employment and Wages
Empirical analysis of mergers and acquisitions in eight important food industries suggests that workers in acquired plants realized modest increases in employment and wages relative to other workers. Results also show that mergers and acquisitions reduced the likelihood of plant closures while high relative labor costs encouraged plant shutdowns. Human beings and farm animals are dependent upon seeds for a considerable portion of their food supply. Many of these substances have been the subject of rigid dietary investigations within recent years - especially the grains - because of their great economic importance. Soy beans, which have been used as a food by Chinese and Japanese for hundreds of years, are becoming of great importance in the United States. There are many varieties of soy beans known. Granthan reports the analysis of seventeen varieties, and he does not include all. The color of the bean varies from the light yellow of the Manchu to the black of the Sable. Daniels and Nichols found that a sixty percent level of soy bean furnished adequate protein and a sufficient amount of vitamins A and B for normal growth. They found that the addition of butter fat prevented failure of the young to develop normally. McCollum, Simmonds, and Pitz observed that a twenty-five percent level of soy bean furnished adequate vitamin B for growth. Osborne and Mendel found that good reproduction and normal growth of young could be obtained on a diet containing fifty percent of soy bean as the only source of vitamin B
The Quantum Modular Group in (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity
The role of the modular group in the holonomy representation of
(2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity is studied. This representation can be viewed
as a "Heisenberg picture", and for simple topologies, the transformation to the
ADM "Schr{\"o}dinger picture" may be found. For spacetimes with the spatial
topology of a torus, this transformation and an explicit operator
representation of the mapping class group are constructed. It is shown that the
quantum modular group splits the holonomy representation Hilbert space into
physically equivalent orthogonal ``fundamental regions'' that are interchanged
